First responders from the Yorktown Fire Department were called in to assist Yorktown Police officers at approximately 7:50 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2526 to make the strange rescue.
Officials said the woman was driving when she heard what she believed to be a cat meowing from inside the vehicle. She proceeded to stop, investigated the incident, and found a tiny stray kitten had crawled into the engine compartment for warmth and got stuck.
The driver and other bystanders passing by unsuccessful attempted to free the kitten without success, prompting her to call emergency services.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the kitten - which appeared to be healthy - but out of arm’s reach. Crews then turned to the “Man (kitten) in Machine Kit” in a second effort to recover the kitten.
First responders worked for approximately 45 minutes and managed to retrieve the kitten without damaging the car or causing any more distress for the feline, which escaped its holder’s hands and took off into the woods to shake it off.
The driver was able to then drive off without any more animals attempting to take up shop inside her car.
